Spending on compute and storage infrastructure products for cloud infrastructure dropped 2.4 per cent year on year in the second quarter of 2021 to $16.8bn (â¬14.4bn).
This includes spending on dedicated and shared environments, according to data from IDC.
The analyst said the dip comes after six quarters of consecutive growth, and most notably compares to the 39.1 per cent annual rise seen by the market in Q2 2020 as the world went into lockdown with the first wave of business and country closures causing a spike in investments in cloud services and infrastructure.
Investments in non-cloud infrastructure climbed 3.4 per cent in Q2 to $13.4bn (â¬115bn) recovering from a 7.2 per cent decline in Q2 of last year.
IDC data also found spending on shared cloud infrastructure reached $11.9bn (â¬10.2bn), falling 6.1 per cent compared to Q2 2020, and a 17 per cent increase from Q1 this year.
Spending on dedicated cloud infrastructure rose 7.8 per cent year over year in Q2 2021 to $4.9bn (â¬4.2bn) with 46.5 per cent of this amount deployed on customer premises.
Despite a weaker Q2, IDC forecasts cloud infrastructure spending to grow 12 per cent to $74.3bn (â¬64bn) for 2021, while non-cloud infrastructure is expected to rise 2.7 per cent to $58.9bn (â¬50.7bn) after two years of declines.
Shared cloud infrastructure is expected to grow by 11.1 per cent year over year to $51.4bn (â¬44.3bn) for the full year.
While spending on dedicated cloud infrastructure is expected to climb 14.1 per cent to $22.8bn (â¬19.6bn) for the full year, according to IDC.
