Online fraud is the most prevalent type of cyber fraud, according to a recent report from cyber security authority Kaspersky Lab.
The report, which covered 30 countries, found that almost a third of the world’s internet population (31 percent) has been the victim of online fraud within the last 12 months.
At the top of the list was Russia, where 53 percent of people experienced online fraud during that 12 month period, followed by Brazil (47 percent), India (44 percent), Mexico (36 percent) and France (35 percent).
The report also revealed that more than a quarter of those who were victims of online fraud in the last 12 months lost money as a result.
The median amount lost was between $50 and$100, but in some cases people reported losing significantly more.
Some victims lost up to $50,000 and 10 percent lost more than $1,000.
The most common types of online fraud reported were email fraud (28 percent), phishing or malicious websites (19 percent) and account theft (13 percent).
The report concluded that online fraud is now pervasive around the world, with more than half of online consumers across the globe reporting that they had been a victim of fraud in the last 12 months.
The findings suggest that fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated and are targeting users from all walks of life.
As a result, online consumers must take steps to protect themselves and their data against cybercriminals.
