A survey conducted by Ponemon Institute reveals that many enterprises are concerned about their preparedness to handle the security implications brought on by quantum computing. 61% of the surveyed IT and cybersecurity professionals expressed concerns about their organization’s lack of preparedness for a post-quantum computing future.
Additionally, 74% worry that their data could be targeted now by cybercriminals and decrypted in the future when the capability arises.
Although 30% of respondents have set aside a budget to prepare for quantum computing, only 52% are currently taking inventory of the types of cryptography keys used.
While 59% believe their leadership team is aware of the security implications, 23% state that their leadership team is not aware.
A significant percentage believes that their organizations must be prepared for quantum computing within the next five to seven years.
However, 10% do not believe their organization will be ready in time.
Furthermore, 25% lack a centralized strategy for managing cryptography, and 36% have a limited strategy applied only to specific use cases or applications.
The study also highlights regional differences, with respondents from the US, EMEA, and Asia-Pacific believing they have fewer than five years to prepare.
Overall, the survey underscores the need for organizations to begin preparations for the crypto-agile transition to quantum-safe algorithms.
