FBI warns hackers are targeting plastic surgery offices, stealing nude photos>
Fox 26 Houston – Heather Sullivan
The FBI has issued a warning about cyber hackers targeting plastic surgery centers and their patients, aiming to extort money.
Hackers have been stealing patient information, including nude photos and medical records, and threatening to release them to the patients’ social networks unless a ransom is paid.
These attacks have been reported on various plastic surgery centers, and the hackers target affluent patients who often have more disposable income.
The attackers send phishing emails posing as staff members from organizations like the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, deploying malware to access patient records.
The stolen information is then cross-referenced with patients’ social media profiles to gather more personal details.
Patients are advised to inquire about information security measures from healthcare providers and be cautious about sharing personal information online.
Plastic surgery centers should have robust security systems in place and train employees to avoid falling for phishing schemes.
The FBI recommends using strong and unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and reporting cyber attacks to IC3.gov.
