Though cybersecurity is a top priority officially, the reality is tension and blame between the teams.
This problem has increased recently as fewer CISOs now report into technology executives.
Most tech leaders Forrester interviewed reported poor relationships with their CISOs – at best conditional, often outright hostile.
Tech teams feel security counterparts have competing goals, impractical demands, and a pessimistic attitude.
But they may not grasp CISO challenges like talent gaps and burnout.
Understanding motivations and trauma provides context to improve relations.
Forrester expected exploring aligned strategies and processes would help.
But the key themes from collaborative tech/security partners were empathy and trust – critical yet oft-confused as vague.
Luckily both can be deliberately built.
The research provides a trust evaluation and scorecard for tech/security relationships.
It outlines specific actions to build, repair, or strengthen these crucial bonds.
Fundamentally this is about human connections, despite the technical roles.
Evaluating and purposefully bettering work relationships, as 2 million do annually with Myers-Briggs, can create solidarity needed to address cyber risk.
