Trustwave, a cybersecurity and managed security services provider, has released a report titled “2024 Public Sector Threat Landscape: Trustwave Threat Intelligence Briefing and Mitigation Strategies.” The report highlights the unique cybersecurity challenges faced by the public sector and provides insights and strategies for cybersecurity leaders to strengthen their defenses
Key points:
1) Cyberattacks on the public sector can erode public trust, disrupt daily life, and endanger lives, especially when targeting critical infrastructure.
2) The public sector is a strong focus for criminals, hacktivists, and nation-state-sponsored organizations due to factors such as legacy systems, fragmented IT infrastructure, sensitive data, limited budgets, and complex regulations.
3) Geopolitical motivations are a significant concern, with threat actors using deepfakes, social media manipulation, and election interference to perform espionage.
4) Public-private partnership is crucial for defending individuals, businesses, and the government itself
Trustwave SpiderLabs’ findings:
1) Phishing is responsible for 80% of initial access gained by attackers in the public sector.
2) LockBit 3.0 carried out 43% of ransomware attacks in the public sector, followed by Medusa (13%) and Play (12%).
3) Local governments are the most vulnerable public sector entities to ransomware attacks, accounting for 60% of incidents
The report analyzes threat groups and their methods throughout the attack cycle, from initial foothold to exfiltration, and examines global cybersecurity challenges facing government institutions and essential public services
