Bitwarden, a password manager company, is advancing its services by embracing passkeys, a passwordless authentication method.
With the acquisition of passwordless.dev and the development of new passkey tools, Bitwarden is preparing for the adoption of passkeys.
The company has rolled out passkey management tools for all users, including those on the free plan, allowing them to add and manage passkeys directly within their password vault.
Passkeys provide a faster and more secure alternative to traditional passwords and two-factor authentication, utilizing cryptographic authentication based on WebAuthn protocols from the FIDO Alliance.
This system employs a pair of keys: a public key on the website and a private key on the user’s device, enhancing security since a hacker would need access to the private key to compromise an account.
The adoption of passkeys is growing, with major websites like Amazon, Google, eBay, PayPal, WhatsApp, and Uber already supporting this feature.
Bitwarden’s initiative to support passkeys aims to simplify and secure user logins and encourage a shift toward a password-free future.
