In an effort to further focus its cybersecurity and Internet of Things (IoT) initiatives, BlackBerry Ltd. confirmed it plans to establish two separate businesses within the next three years.
BlackBerry announced it will split its company into two distinct units in 2024, with one dedicated to its enterprise cybersecurity business and the other focused on its automotive and industrial IoT solutions.
The Canadian secure communications and software provider said that this move will allow the company to better prioritize and manage its resources, while enabling the two business segments to maximize their market potential.
The automotive and IoT division will be responsible for managing the company’s existing automobile platforms, such as its QNX operating system and its Jarvis cybersecurity platform.
It will also explore ways to expand the range of secure platforms it offers to this industry.
The enterprise cybersecurity division, meanwhile, will focus on key products such as its Cylance artificial intelligence-driven endpoint security product, its Optics XDR platform and its Workspaces mobility management platform.
BlackBerry CEO John Chen said in a statement that the restructuring will “layout clear paths for growth, innovation and value creation” for both segments of the business. “Our restructuring and alignment of resources will unlock the next generation of growth and progress,” he added.
The news follows last year’s announcement of a five-year strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services, announced in December 2020, which will focus on developing automotive and industrial solutions for the cloud.
BlackBerry’s transformation into two distinct businesses positions the company to better capitalize on its technological expertise and position itself as a leader in both the automotive and enterprise cybersecurity markets.
