New GenAI ‘upload file’ options spur data risk fears

New GenAI ‘upload file’ options spur data risk fears>
SC Magazine – Stephen Weigand
The article discusses the rise in attempts to share sensitive data outside company private networks through the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Researchers at Menlo Security found an 80% increase in attempted file uploads to GenAI sites from July to December 2023, and highlighted the security risks presented by these tools and their platform owners that collect massive amounts of user data often exposed publicly via the platform’s own large language model data sets.
The study also found that attempts to input personally identifiable information (PII) into GenAI platforms represent over half of data loss protection (DLP) events, while confidential documents were the next most common type of data attempted to be shared with GenAI platforms.
To address this issue, Menlo Security recommends adopting security technology that enables policy management on a generative AI group level, providing protection against a broader cross-section of generative AI sites.
