How Ann Arborâs Duo Security went from a two-man operation to a $2.35 billion company>
Michigan Live – Dana Afana
ANN ARBOR, MI â Dug Songâs wife was six months pregnant when he launched Duo Security in 2009. He gathered up his savings, partnered up with co-founder Jon Oberheide and moved on from his job as chief security architect at Arbor Networks, launching his own cybersecurity firm in a community, he says, with a built-environment for learning, teamwork and cultural development. Key to starting a new business, Song said, is having a safety net built from savings or support from family and friends in preparation for difficult moments. Duo boasts almost 20,000 clients across the world and hopes to grow that number to more than 800,000 after being acquired by tech giant Cisco for $2.35 billion, Song said. Cisco sought Duoâs expertise in securely connecting its users in various networks. The sale to Cisco wasnât just a business opportunity for Song, but a way to vastly expand Duoâs influence on improving cybersecurity for small companies and large, all over the world. Duo employs 800 workers in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Austin, Texas, San Francisco and London.
