The Confidential Computing Consortium, a group of leading technology companies, is trying to accelerate the adoption of confidential computing techniques, such as secure enclaves and homomorphic encryption, to protect sensitive data in the cloud. The consortium, which was established in October 2019 and has more than 50 members from 16 countries, includes names like ARM, Intel, Microsoft, Accenture, IBM, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Red Hat, and many more. The initiative was launched in response to the growing need for strong data protection in the cloud, amidst rising cyber threats, data breaches, and privacy concerns. Confidential computing solutions use technical methods and advanced security protocols to keep data secure, allowing organizations to store, process, and share sensitive data in the cloud without the risk of unauthorized access or manipulation. Secure enclave technology, for example, encrypts data and stores it in an isolated environment to guard against external access. Homomorphic encryption technology, on the other hand, allows data to be processed while still in an encrypted state – without a need for decryption. The consortium is working to promote the adoption of secure enclaves, homomorphic encryption and other confidential computing technologies, to enable more secure data processing and storage in the cloud.
