The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued an alert to healthcare organizations warning them of the threat posed by the recently discovered Akira ransomware.
According to the alert, the ransomware exploits vulnerabilities in commonly used Windows operating system applications, such as Microsoft Office and Microsoft Exchange, to gain a foothold on organizational networks.
Once attackers gain access, they can encrypt data and demand a ransom in exchange for its release.
The alert warns that actors behind the malware have targeted U.S.-based healthcare networks, with data exfiltration potentially occurring in addition to encryption attacks.
The FBI recommends that healthcare entities regularly patch their systems, monitor for suspicious activity, and back up data regularly.
The agency also advises organizations to avoid paying any ransom demands in an effort to avoid further attacks.
