Kaspersky conducted research on the evolving threats targeting the Internet of Things (IoT) sector.
They found that hackers are targeting IoT devices for Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, with over 700 ads for DDoS attack services discovered on the dark web.
The cost of these services varied from $20 per day to $10,000 per month, with an average of $63.5 per day or $1,350 per month.
The research also revealed an underground economy on the dark web focused on IoT-related services, including exploits for zero-day vulnerabilities and IoT malware.
Brute-forcing weak passwords and exploiting vulnerabilities in network services were the primary methods used to infect IoT devices.
Brute-force attacks were primarily directed at Telnet, with SSH presenting a greater challenge for attackers.
The report highlighted the need for vendors to prioritize cybersecurity in IoT devices, including changing default passwords and consistently releasing patches to fix vulnerabilities.
Kaspersky recommended conducting regular security audits, using network traffic monitoring solutions, and protecting both industrial and customer IoT devices.
They also advised assessing device security before implementation, using secure and complex passwords, avoiding sharing sensitive information on social networks, and staying informed about IoT vulnerabilities.
In summary, Kaspersky’s research emphasizes the growing risks faced by IoT devices and the importance of adopting robust security measures to protect against threats such as DDoS attacks, ransomware, and malware.
