Proton, a Swiss privacy-focused company known for its email and calendar services, has launched a desktop application for Windows and macOS.
Initially available in beta for their premium tier subscribers, the app is set to be opened to all Proton users in early 2024.
The company aims to provide an advantage over Google by emphasizing a modern design and a clutter-free experience, suggesting that desktop apps can offer superior offline support compared to browser-based email usage.
The launch of the desktop app coincides with the introduction of new features across all platforms, including auto-forwarding email rules and integration with customer relationship management (CRM) and customer support software.
Proton’s focus remains on end-to-end encryption, with the challenge of re-encrypting messages for different recipients while maintaining security.
Attachment previews have been made available on all Proton Mail platforms, enabling users to view attachments directly from the inbox without compromising security.
Furthermore, Proton Mail users can now snooze messages, and enhancements have been made to the Proton Calendar, including search functionality on the web and the addition of public holidays.
The company has been active throughout the year, releasing a native Windows file-syncing app in July and a password manager in April.
The Proton Mail desktop app is currently accessible in beta for Proton Visionary subscribers, with registrations open until January 3.
Auto-forwarding is now available for paid users on any plan, while attachment previews, snoozing, and calendar improvements are accessible to all Proton account holders.
