Abnormal Security Shares Examples of Attacks Using Generative AI>
Security Boulevard – Michael Vizard
Abnormal Security has highlighted how cybercriminals are adopting generative AI to orchestrate cyberattacks, manifesting in various examples such as phishing campaigns impersonating customer service representatives from well-known organizations like Netflix, cosmetics companies, and insurance providers.
These attacks are becoming increasingly challenging to detect as cybercriminals leverage authentic domains and communication channels.
Mike Britton, the CISO of Abnormal Security, emphasized that combating such sophisticated attacks will necessitate the use of AI-powered cybersecurity platforms capable of identifying deviations from standard user behavior for further investigation.
As generative AI evolves, cybercriminals are anticipated to employ deepfakes using audio and video to create seemingly authentic content, further complicating detection.
This evolution implies a need for cybersecurity to adapt to the increasing utilization of generative AI in social engineering tactics, particularly in business email compromise (BEC) attacks.
While end-user training and awareness are critical, the escalating sophistication of attacks driven by generative AI may render them challenging for human detection, prompting a greater reliance on machine-based anomaly identification.
As a precaution, organizations are advised to exercise caution when conducting transactions via email and may eventually adopt more selective practices regarding email interactions to mitigate potential risks associated with advanced cyber threats.
