NETSCOUT SYSTEMS, INC. released their 1H2023 DDoS Threat Intelligence Report, revealing that there was a 31% year-over-year increase in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, with approximately 7.9 million attacks launched in the first half of 2023.
Recent global events, such as the Russia-Ukraine war and NATO bids, have contributed to the growth of DDoS attacks.
Countries like Finland, Turkey, Hungary, Sweden, and others were targeted due to their involvement in these events.
The report also highlighted a trend of increased DDoS attacks against wireless telecommunications providers, particularly in the APAC region, where there was a 294% increase in attacks.
This increase can be attributed to the shift of broadband gaming users to 5G fixed wireless access as providers roll out their networks.
NETSCOUT gathers insights from its ATLAS sensor network, which analyzes internet peering traffic and observes trends.
The report found a 5.7% increase in internet peering traffic compared to 2022.
It also highlighted the growth of HTTP/S application layer attacks by nearly 500% since 2019 and a 17% growth in DNS reflection/amplification volumes in the first half of 2023.
The report noted the rise of carpet-bombing attacks, with a 55% increase to over 724 attacks daily.
It also highlighted the prevalence of DNS water-torture attacks, which rose by almost 353% since the beginning of the year.
The report found that higher education and government sectors were disproportionately targeted, with adversaries leveraging different types of abusable infrastructure in their attacks.
NETSCOUT emphasized that a relatively small number of nodes are responsible for a significant number of DDoS attacks, with attackers re-using abusable infrastructures.
Despite the persistence of these nodes, the impact fluctuates as attackers rotate through different lists of infrastructure.
In conclusion, the report highlights the increasing frequency and sophistication of DDoS attacks, driven by global events and 5G network expansion.
It emphasizes the need for organizations, especially in industries like telecommunications, education, and government, to prioritize DDoS attack mitigation and adopt robust cybersecurity measures.
