Team Cymru, a global leader in external threat intelligence and exposure management, released its annual “Voice of a Threat Hunter 2024” report, highlighting the crucial role of proactive threat hunting in combating cyber threats
The report surveyed 293 cybersecurity professionals to uncover the current state of threat hunting programs, their effectiveness, and the obstacles they face
Key findings from the report:
1) Nearly 50% of respondents have experienced a major security breach in the past 12 months
Of those affected, 72% say their threat hunting program played a key role in preventing or mitigating the breach.
2) The top challenges for 39% of respondents are lack of appropriate funding and lack of data to threat hunt against.
3) The majority of respondents say proactive detection of previously unknown threats is their top objective.
4) 53% of respondents would quit their job today to work at an organization that offered better threat hunting tools and technology, even if paid less.
5) The most valuable threat hunting products are network forensic detection, netflow telemetry, raw network telemetry data, and/or full packet captures.
6) The top priority for the next year is expanding third-party monitoring for signals of compromise
The report emphasizes the escalating financial impact of data breaches on organizations, with the global average cost reaching $4.45 million in 2023, a 15% increase from 2020) As cyber attacks continue to increase in frequency and sophistication, organizations must seek new methods, including real-time threat intelligence, greater visibility of threats across third parties, and broader adoption of proactive security measures beyond their perimeter.
